Make a comfortable non-stretch “Community Face Mask” that fits close to the contours of your face with the help of side darts, a double nose wire and an adjustable tie around the back of the head. Available in different sizes, depending on your chin to nose measurement. This pattern will give you a close fitting and comfortable Mask. Fabric requirements: 2 rectangles (12" x 10" / 30cm x 25cm) of densely woven, non-stretch cotton fabric.
Attention

Important: Reusable fabric masks are not meant to replace medical grade PPE (Personal Protective Equipment), nor are they a replacement for recommended measures to stop community spread like social distancing, frequent hand washing with soap and warm water, and refraining from face-touching. Disclaimer

If you use a self-sewn mask, you should be aware that this is not protective equipment in the real sense and certainly not a medical product, only a makeshift. The protective effect of self-sewn masks cannot be determined in general. It depends, among other things, on how well the mask fits on the face, the extent to which the wearer adheres to the rules for hygienic handling of the mask and which materials have been used.
Nevertheless, various expert panels and scientific studies have come to the conclusion that makeshift masks can be valuable in containing a pandemic. This is because even a substance with a poor filtering effect stops a good part of the potentially infectious aerosols. This is especially true for the much larger droplets that are expelled when coughing or sneezing. Incomplete protection is better than no protection at all.

Correct usage of a cloth face mask

  • DO wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for 20 seconds before putting the (clean) mask on
  • DO secure the mask comfortably but tightly over your nose AND mouth - a close fit is a must to keep air from escaping out the side of the mask
  • DO shape the nose wire - there should be no gaps
  • do NOT continuously remove and replace the mask during use, or push below your chin
  • do NOT touch the outside of the mask during and after wearing, or while removing the mask - touch only the ties.
  • DO clean and disinfect the mask directly after use, or store in a sealed container (like a ziploc bag) until you are able to. See care instructions for details
  • DO wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water for 20 seconds after removing your mask

Cloth masks should be washed in the washing machine at 60° C / 140° F or higher after each use. Alternatively, the mask can be boiled for a few minutes (in a pot on the stove) or washed out by hand and then ironed on a high setting. Let the Mask dry completely and store it in a clean place (like a clean plastic bag).
